DUTCH TILES PLAY CUBE

Rattling cuddly cubes with old Dutch tiles.
The
cubes show early seventeenth-century Dutch tiles. Such polychrome tiles were
produced in Holland in large numbers before the famous blue and white Delft
tiles came into fashion. The technique of their production, which used only four
colours, was imported from southern Europe. Many southern motifs, too, such as
pomegranates, bunches of grapes and exotic animals, were used at first. Later
the decoration of the tiles came to include typically Dutch images, such as
tulips and the Lion of the national coat of arms.
On
these early Dutch tiles the corner motifs were as important as the central
image. Only when four of them are joined together the full, regular pattern
becomes visible.
The four cuddly cubes are sown together in such a way that you can move and turn them to create six different panels with old Dutch tiles.
