Delft blue kissing couple

The Delft blue kissing couple is one of the best known Dutch souvenirs. Unfortunately nobody knows the origin of this sweet scene.
Delftware has been popular since the 17th century, but the base of these figures may date from even earlier times. It could be that these figures refer to the ‘Kiss of Delft’, the ‘reconciliation’ of Jacqueline of Bavaria and Philip of Burgundy that ended the fight between the Hooks and the Cods in 1428.

Today, in varying combinations, the figures have also become a symbol of Dutch tolerance.
